Actions with Chats
The Chats feature lets you securely message your accountant, share files, track tasks, and even embed videos—all in one place. Below’s how to make the most of it.
Chats, explained
Chats let you securely communicate with your accountant without using third-party applications.
Here’s what’s available:
- Both you and your preparer can use Chats to ask questions , get info and upload and download documents .
- Your preparer might add tasks for you inside a chat thread.
- Your preparer might add client requests inside a chat thread.
- Once you’ve completed a task, either you or your accountant can check it off.
- Once everything in a chat thread is completed, your preparer may archive it.
View message threads and reply
To view all your chats, go to Chats in the main menu. Chats are sorted by the most recent response, with the latest ones at the top.
On the left, you’ll see a list showing the subject line, author’s name, task status, as well as the date and time of the most recent response for each thread. Unread threads are marked with a green dot. Archived threads don’t appear in the chat list but can be accessed by clicking Filter in the top right corner and selecting Status: Archived.
Once there’s a new chat, you’ll see a notification in the Home section under the Chats subsection. All pending chats and any included tasks are displayed on your dashboard. Click the notification to view and respond.
You’ll always get a push notification when your accountant sends you a message or asks for additional info. Tap the notification to view it.
To access your chats, tap the Chats section in the navigation bar or tap the Chats subsection in the Home section. If you have unread chats, they will be highlighted in the Waiting for action block, sorted chronologically by the latest response.
The red number on the right indicates chats needing attention. Threads show the latest response, author, subject, and client task status. Unread threads have a red badge containing the number of unread chats and unchecked tasks.
Tap the thread title to view and reply. Read the message, write a separate message in the field or swipe to the right to reply to the message. Then tap the send icon when you’re done.
Complete your tasks
Your accountant can assign tasks inside a chat. Tasks look like the items of a to-do checklist. Once a task is completed, either you or your accountant can check it off.
If there are any tasks attached to the chat thread, a section called Your Tasks appears inside the thread. You will also see the number of tasks assigned/completed in the chat thread name.
You can also check your tasks right from the notification on your dashboard.
If you want to track your tasks from all your chats on a single page, go to the Chats tab, click on the Filter button far to the right, and select:
-
Incomplete: To view all the chat threads with your tasks to complete.
-
Completed: To view all the chat threads with checked-off to-do items.
-
All: To view all the chat threads with your tasks.
Then click Apply.
You will see tasks both in the messages list and inside the thread. Tap the task to complete.
Include videos
Sometimes words are not enough—and visuals are a big help. Embed videos from Loom, Vimeo, YouTube or Google Drive if you want to show your preparer something you feel is too difficult to explain.
Click the embed-video icon (the push-play arrow) in the text-formatting toolbar, then paste the link to your video.
Your preparer will be able to watch the video right inside the chat thread.
- Copy a link to a video. 2. Inside a chat thread, tap the plus icon and select Embed video.
- Paste the link and tap Attach.
- Add any message and tap the send icon.
Now you and your accountant can watch the embedded video within the app.
Send images
You can share pictures or screenshots to help your preparer understand details more clearly. Images can be added to your messages in a few simple ways:
-
Upload from your device by clicking the picture icon and selecting an image file.
-
Copy an image from a website or your computer and paste it directly into the chat message.
-
Simply drag an image file from your device into the message field.
Images appear directly in the chat thread so your preparer can view them instantly.
You can attach images in a chat thread by tapping the + button in the chat and selecting Photo library.
Reminders in Chats
If your accountant enables automatic reminders for chats, you’ll get notifications when you haven’t replied.
On mobile, chats with reminders turned on are marked with a bell icon next to their name.
